In more than twenty years of working as a CPA, many people have come to me with the same concerns: they don’t know where their money goes every month and they want help to get ahead financially.
They’ve been using budgets just as we’ve all been taught to do. But tracking each and every expenditure sucks (ain’t nobody got time for that!) and they can’t keep up with it. They don’t stick to their budgets. Trying to get ahead with budgeting feels like slow progress of two steps forward then one (or two) right back. Or like trying to run underwater.
You see, budgets are ideals – a plan to contain and limit spending so that you may have something left over to save. (Really…saving with leftovers?) But budgets, like diets, don’t work. We are left disappointed at the end of each month. We compensate for these bad feelings by gorging on chocolate cake, or a spending spree. THIS is no way to get ahead.
How DO we get ahead then?
Let’s start by being REALISTIC with our finances. If the ideal is saving, then let’s do that first:
Save first, then spend.
We need to change up our order of money management – that’s all.
It really is this SIMPLE.
